Crepe Paper Rose Pom Tutorial

A customer this week sent me pictures of her Dimpleprints party and she had created these darling crepe paper poms. Thanks to the House of Smiths blog, I found a tutorial and thought I'd post it here for you all to see! Such a great idea and alternative to the typical tissue hanging poms!

Supplies Needed:

Styrofoam Ball Forms
Crepe Paper Streamers {Color of your choosing}
Glue Gun & Lots of Glue Sticks
Roll of Tape
Measuring Stick

1. Cut the crepe paper strips at 24 inches in length.

2. Crumple the strips to make them softer and more fabric looking, then straighten them out.

3. Begin to roll, starting small… and then get a little looser, like a real rose.
Periodically, about 4 or 5 turns in, put a dot of glue on the end, by your thumb, to keep it from unraveling.

4. Wind the paper around the middle base roll, and twist at the same time so that it looks MORE like a rose and LESS like a cinnamon roll. Be patient with the first few flowers. It takes a couple to get it down. But once you do… you’ll fly through them!

5. Gather the end piece of crepe paper and then add a dab of glue to the outside of the rose itself, and stick it on the edge.

6. Set it down and let the glue dry!

7. After you have a few roses done, begin gluing them to the styrofoam ball. If some roses have longer stems than others just cut off the stem so that they can sit nicely flat on the ball form.

8. Add a little puddle of hot glue on the ball, lightly press the rose on and you’re good to go! Use a roll of tape to help keep the ball from rolling around on the table. Make sure not to put the roses TOO close together or they’ll look crowded.

9. Once they are all done, use ribbon and some sewing push pins to adhere the ribbon to the ball and hang them anywhere you want!

A sweet party idea that I love is a cookies and milk party! Use chocolate, strawberry and regular milk to play up color ideas, and put flower arrangements in "vintage" colored or clear milk bottles (super cheap at the thrift store!) to make things a little girly-er!

I threw a small shower for my cousin. We went with a "sprinkle" instead of a full on baby shower as it was for a 2nd baby. She had no preference, so I use one of my favorite color combos grey, orange and turquoise. Congrats Cara on baby boy #2! NOTE to self, take pictures of parties you host! Watermelon Party

A sweet watermelon theme is a great one for summer. My daughter wishes she had a summer birthday for this reason, she want a watermelon, cherry & strawberry birthday (her favorites), but since those would cost a small fortune in December (in Washington), that isn't happening here (I am a bargain birthday momma!). With a bright and cheery palette of pinks, red, greens & touches of black it is a darling loose theme easily pulled together with a few watermelon touches!

I love these oversized return & shipping labels. I can create a digital you print designs available to match your invite for $3! I send as an image file so you can insert into your mail merge & add your contact. You can find large round labels at specialty paper stores, or go the easier route & print on full sheet labels & cut down (by hand with a circle cutter or large paper punch!).

Okay, so maybe I don't scream for ice cream, while pregnant well that's a whole other story (although, I tend to be more of an ice cream sneak 2:00 am & ice cream not such a great combo!).

With the weather warming up, I have summer celebrations on my mind. I am thinking about creating 1-2 ice cream printable parties, 1 boy & 1 girl? Or gender neutral? What colors? I haven't decided-comments & suggestions welcomed-please, I am stumped on this one!

Tissue Poms

Tissue poms are a great way to add fun, color & whimsy to your party (or even a bedroom, nursery or playroom). They are easy & affordable to make. No need to buy them, they are really easy to make & take only a couple of minutes each. I even have had my 6 year old make them! Martha Stewart has a great tutorial here. I have found that pipe cleaners work better than wire, as wire can tend to rip the tissue (maybe because I use dollar store tissue!). I usually buy my tissue at the dollar store! You can make numerous poms out of a $1 pack of tissue. They even work with used/old tissue, just flatten it out a bit. Cutting the ends differently creates different effects. You can even make little ones for garland, napkin rings, whimsical flowers, etc.

A sweet repeat customer of mine contacted me a while back to do a custom design for a baby shower she was hosting. She needed invitations, favor tags, large return/mailing labels, place cards and a banner inspired by a polka dot giraffe onsies & toy (see the diaper cake) in a modern color scheme of gray, orange & yellow. I love how her shower turned out; a great mix of elegant with classic stripes, fun with polka dots and modern in color. The unexpected pairing of gray with the citrus colors turned out great! Alison did a wonderful job with this shower.

Owl Party

Owl parties have been popular for a while now & after a few requests for an owl invite, I came up with a few variations, check them out in my shop. This theme is fun for everything from a first birthday to an older kids night owl sleep over or even a daytime pj party, who doesn't love pjs!

Menu: Night time munchies-popcorn, junk food, chips, etc. (oh how my kids would love this menu, okay me too!!)

Decorations: There are darling owl pillow all over the web (etsy, amazon, etc.). They would be fairly simple to make with some inexpensive felt (you could sew or even hot glue them together). Owl pillows would be a fun craft/favor for older children to make.

How cute are these round felt owls? Here is the tutorial . They call for styrofoam balls which can be surprisingly pricey! I have modified crafts which have called for them before by using shaved down styrofoam squares (cheaper, sometimes you can even find them at the dollar store!), or even a wodded up old shirt or rag (using duct tape to form a ball shape) as well as a cheapo dollar store ball (note you can't use hot glue on these though as they will melt, but you could probably wrap with duct tape a few times to avoid this problem).

St. Patrick's Day..Green Grub

Leprechauns visit our house and leave a little green behind (along with a scavenger hunt of goodies). A little creativity & some green food coloring can go along way! Green milk, shamrock peppers, green noodles (just add the colors to the water & boil noodles as normal), green jello, etc. So many ideas. Wish I could do green eggs & ham, love that book, but kids are allergic to eggs (and I don't like them), but a fun idea none the less. Happy St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day Decor

I am not one for over the top plastic shamrock decor. This year I went with natural green themed decor, moss (love the different colors & textures), sticks, etc. (all free thanks to my brothers property!). I would post pics, but our camera is with my husband at work, so no pics of what we did, our camera is awful anyways, new camera coming soon-whoo hooo! (any recommendations?). My kids & I went on a nature hike and gathered moss, sticks & such and built leprechaun house terrariums in large glass jars. I think the leprechaums will be making their appearance in the next few days, kids are hoping to catch one! They even built a ladder out of sticks (okay, i had to build for them it was a bit harder than my overly creative & ambitious 3 & 6 year old could handle!). The leprechaun visits our house, how about yours? It is really fun and considering it is probably the last "believing" year for Abby, I am tring to milk it all I can; 1 more Christmas-please!!!!

With an good dose of early Spring happening here in my neck of the woods (cherry blossoms, daffodils & all were blooming late February, that is unheard of in the Pacific NW!), I was inspired to design a few bright, crisp & fun baby shower invites.

Clothes Pin Doll Cake Toppers & Tutorial

I love the darling clothes pin cake toppers that I came across some a few months ago on Etsy & decided to make the one pictured above for Abby's 6th birthday (back in December, still need to get the pics up, our camera was on a weird setting so I don't have many great pics-bummer!). Granted I decided to make hers the day before & had to improvise as I couldn't find the proper "head", but I think it all worked out, yes her dress is a bit wrinkled but hey we all have a wrinkled day every now & then!

I scrounged up things around my house. I used a thread spool for the cupcake base and wrapped it with a ribbon scrap. I topped the cupcake with pink painted fiberfil (no we didn't light the candle, realized it was a complete fire hazard!). I also used the fiber fill for the snow & sprinkled on my favorite Martha Stewart glitter. I wrapped foil balls with small pieces of fabric to create the candies & used an old rubber stamp base for the gift. It was a really fun project to do with Abby & looked darling as the centerpiece of her sweet shoppe. Wouldn't this be a fun project for older girls at a doll themed party.

Yummy Molten Lava Cake

I meant to post this last week as a great Valentine's Day dessert, but I didn't get around to it. It is too good of a recipe (easy & yummy!), to not post. The picture doesn't do it justice, you cut into it and it opens up a gooey chocolate lava center.

Cook Time:
14 min
Level: Easy
Yield: 6 cakes

Ingredients
6 (1-ounce) squares bittersweet chocolate
2 (1-ounce) squares semisweet chocolate
10 tablespoons (1 1/4 stick) butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
3 large eggs
3 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons orange liqueur (not required, it still turns out yummy without!)

Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Grease 6 (6-ounce) custard cups. Melt the chocolates and butter in the microwave, or in a double boiler. Add the flour and sugar to chocolate mixture. Stir in the eggs and yolks until smooth. Stir in the vanilla and orange liqueur. Divide the batter evenly among the custard cups. Place in the oven and bake for 14 minutes. The edges should be firm but the center will be runny. Run a knife around the edges to loosen and invert onto dessert plates.

I have seen a handful or 2 of darling robot parties floating around out there and after a few requests for a robot themed invite, I finally came up with one.

Great thing about this party theme, is you can use household junk as decor!

Food
Label your food with cute tags:
Computer Chips (chips)
Nuts & Bolts (Chex mix, nuts, pretzels, etc. Be cautious with nuts-check for allergies with the kids parents prior to serving)
Machine Oil-Drinks
Fuel Cakes (cupcakes)

Serve food in cheap aluminum disposable pans, muffin tins & galvanized buckets.

Decorations
Utilize your household junk, raid those junk drawers, garage & more for goodies to decorate.
Screws, buts, tools, funnels, dryer vent, boxes, metallic paint, foil & more can make some crafty additions to your decor. A birthday banner would be darling strung with nuts. This can be a fun way to get kids involved pre-party with some great craft projects.

Games & Entertainment
Kids can craft robot costumes out of boxes and decorate with "junk". Or have a robot building station where they can create their own little robot to take home (recycled aluminum cans work great!), or setup a lego station.

Sneak Peek: Abby's Sweet Shoppe

Here is a sneak peek of my daughter's 6th birthday party currently in the works. So I tried last year to have a candy themed party (for the 2nd time, she had one when she was 2 and LOVED it!), but she was way into Tinkerbell last year so went that route (much to my dismay, but it is her birthday not mine!). I know there are a ton of darling sweet treats/candy themed parties out there and after seeing all of them Abby decided she DID want one. So I got my creative juices flowing (okay they are always flowing often too much, hence a craft room full of half finished products, so many ideas, so little time!) to come up with something different. I don't like doing what everyone else is doing, so I can headed a direction I don't usually go for kids parties. If you can't tell by my designs, I usually go for big, fun, bright & busy. This time, I decided to go for a more vintage feel & look; Abby's Sweet Shoppe was born. I am going for a pink, red (her 2 favorite colors) and aqua/turqoise-ish blue color. I know it is not what most would expect from my designs, but I love it, I think it is going to be darling! Your thoughts? Any creative ideas out there? Please share.

We are off for a much needed vacation, it has been far too long (2.5 years!). We are so excited and although it is a busy time for my shop it was a great time for my husband's work schedule, school, sports, etc. My shop is open, you can still place your orders and all proofs will be completed upon my return, starting on Tuesday, November 24th. I will check email 1-2 per day, so feel free to contact me with questions, custom orders, etc. (you won't be bothering me--I work late, after everyone is sleeping most of the time anyways-I like being busy!).

Can you guess where we are going from the cute bags pictured above? We are headed the happpiest place on earth! PS-Aren't these bags darling! I wish I had cute luggage, well I did love my luggage, but note to self, don't ever (EVER) buy luggage again with a white design, after 1 trip, it was trashed, okay I am rambling off the topic!

I will be back soon but have a sneak peak coming in my next post of my daughter's 6th birthday in the works!

Mason's mommy contacted me after seeing my construction themed invite in hopes that I could make a construction themed party package. It was one of the next ones on my list and I was able to finish it in time for Mason's 1st birthday. Mom used some of the printables in a creative way to customize her party even further. She utilized the printable pennant banner as a darling picture banner featuring monthly photos of Mason's 1st year. I love the use of a dump truck to house a dessert or cake, so cute! Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?

Okay, so I have to admit, I am not the biggest fan of character birthdays but when your toddler LOVES Elmo (or other furry character), not much to do but go along with it! I didn't want to do your standard party store Elmo party, so I opted for a bit more of a graphic version, utilizing red, orange and white & polka dots as my inspiration (along with Elmo of course!).

Elmo Cupcakes: Lots of variations available on the web. I went the easy route (cake decorating not my strong suit!). Note to get the red frosting, use gel concentrated food coloring (usually available in the candy making section of craft stores), not the typical liquid (as your frosting will be a thin gooey pink mess!!). They are really easy:
1. Frost your cupcakes in red frosting (or pipe them, but I just did a messy frosting job to look like his fur)
2. Eyes: I cut a large marshmallow in half and stuck them into the frosting. I used black frosting or gel for the pupils (NOT suggested), but it bled into the marshmallows overnight. I would opt for attaching a small black candy (junior mints, m&m, chocolate chip, etc.-none of those were options for me, due to my kiddos allergies!).
3. Nose: I used orange large gumdrops. You could also use orange gum balls.

That's about it! I only made a mouth on 1 (for the birthday boy), the red frosting was enough for me! I didn't want red and black stains all over my house after a party full of 2 year olds had their way with the cupcakes.

Elmo Pizzas: This is a fun and easy kid project. I used english muffins as the crust, topped with pizza sauce and used white and orange cheese circles for the eyes and nose (yes, those odd pre wrapped cheeses work great for these. Mine were soy, looked cute, not so yummy-sorry to all you vegans soy cheese is just not the same!). I imagine rounds of mozzarella (or other white cheese) and cheddar would work as well. For the pupil I used olives. You could add pepperoni bits/slices for the fur. Bake for a few minutes and they are done! Really super easy, cute and fun for the kids!

Decor: I went with simple decor in bright red & orange. I added the Elmo face to numerous things throughout the party to carry our theme, cups, food containers, etc. I used dollar store sand pails and shovels to serve the food. It was fun for the kids and the buckets went to good use throughout the summer!

Outfit: There are lots of cute homemade Elmo hats, shirts & outfits available on Etsy. Instead of a party hat for the birthday boy or girl, how about this cute Elmo beanie by TizzyDee, at least they could get some good use of it after the party. I am kind of a do-it-yourselfer, so at the last minute I decided to make the whole family Sesame inspired shirts, not my be work by any means but at 2am the night before the party, what can you expect!

WARNING: You may receive EVERY Elmo toy available (we did and then my son one day about 1.5 months later decided he wasn't into Elmo any more!).

While working on our Thanksgiving plans (we are hosting this year!), I realized it is quickly approaching, I know we haven't yet even reached Halloween, but the few weeks in between seem to come and go so quickly. Our family loves to "experiment" and share new recipes at the holidays. We even host an annual Thanksgiving bake-off. This year the guys are doing it!! Payton's Baseball Party

Pumpkin Carving Tips

Jack -O-Lantern Preservation Tips:

If you live in a dry climate, after carving, soak your pumpkin in cold water, allowing it to absorb water. This prevents premature shriveling. If your pumpkin begins to shrivel, you can resoak or spray with a squirt bottle.

If you live in a wet climate (like me!) and moisture is not the problem but the enemy (moldy pumpkins, not so pretty!). You can prevent mold growth by spraying or coating with a LITTLE unscented bleach.

Always seal all cut edges with a thin layer of petroleum jelly (it works!).

Spider Web Art

Spider web art is a great project for children and an affordable way to change up your Halloween decor.

The delicate and intricate geometric shapes of a spider's web can be preserved and enjoyed with only a few materials and a little practice.

Materials Needed

Sheet(s) of black paper or white paper (construction paper or heavier work best)
Can of hairspray or spray glue (to make your paper a bit tacky)
Can of white spray paint or black spray paint (on white paper)
Can of varnish or clear spray paint

First find a few spider webs. This should be relatively easy since spiders usually build a new one every day. The following procedure can be tricky and will need a bit of practice so it's good to find several webs. First make sure the web is not being used by its builder.

Gently spray your paper with spray glue or hair spray making it slightly tacky but not wet. Gently spray the web with the spray paint. Make sure the spray does not damage the web but only covers it with paint. You will have to act quickly since the spray dries quickly. The most difficult part is next and will usually require a bid of patience. Place the sprayed tacky piece of paper behind the web and gently bring it into contact with the web. Carefully cut the strands of the web. Finally to preserve the web, spray the paper with the attached web with a protective coat of varnish. Frame to preserve. Now you can display the interesting geometric patterns of your own spider web for months to come.

Bird Baby Shower in Orange & Aqua

Decor: Crisp white with pops of orange and aqua. The orange poms are easy to make, directions can be found here. Using branches, hang baby photos of mom & dad, sonogram photos, mom’s belly, etc. with ribbon or thread. Darling banner by Nestables on Etsy. Check your local craft stores (or even flea markets & thrift stores) for old bird cages, spray paint them to match. Bird cages make great centerpieces but can also be used to house gifts, cards, words of advice, etc.

Tables: Make simple runners out of bright fabric, love this one by Amy Butler layer over white linens.

Flower Arrangements: Simple arrangements of stick and/or seasonal flowers. Sticking with seasonal flowers will help you stay budget friendly. Check your local farmers market, flower mart or roadside stands for great deals.

Fall-Dahlias, Chinese Lanterns and Chrysanthemum
Winter-Oranges. Sticks paired with oranges would also work wonderfully and is budget friendly!
Spring-Tulips and Ranunculus
Summer- Zinnias, Lillies & Gerber Daisies

I rarely buy sticks; rather take a nature walk and see what you can find, I love the character of sticks found outdoors vs. those purchased at a craft store (tip, let them dry out and “de-bug” for a few days in a cool dry location).

Food/Dessert: I love these bird cupcakes by Martha. The nest meringues are also cute and fitting with the theme. Top a simple cupcake with a felt bird topper by GiftsDefine. She also carries amazing mobiles which would be a perfect gift for baby. Pair these darling desserts with a simple menu for a great event.

Drinks: Water with orange slices, Izze sodas in Clementine & orange punch (or yummy orange martini).

Favors: Small nests can be found at your local craft store or online, place Jordon almonds or small soaps in the nests for your party favors. Nests can also double as place settings for a seated meal.

BATTER UP!

In June my little boy turned 3 and it was apparent we would be having a baseball themed party. Everything he played turned into a baseball bat & ball; in fact even everything he ate--carrots were bats, peas were balls, hot dogs were bats, buns were rolled into balls, when I say everything, I mean everything! As it was near the 4th of July, I went for an all American, red, white and blue & baseball too theme.

Menu: We went for the classics; burgers, hot dogs, french fries & concession fare-popcorn, licorice, soft pretzels, candy, sunflower seeds & lots more (sadly no peanuts & cracker jacks here, due to our kids food allergies). Drinks-Old fashioned soda

Dessert: I am no cake decorator, by any means. My normal cake people (my aunt or sister) both live out of the state and I have been left to fend for myself and boy could I use some pointers & tips! Love these baseball cupcakes & cookies, wish I could have pulled these off (looks easy right, but when working with vegan/allergen free cake & dairy free frosting-nothing is easy!)!

Decorations: Red, White & Blue

I used 4th of July decor & bunting to create a classic ball park theme.

Centerpieces: I filled galvanized buckets with astroturf & baseballs. I created table runners out of $1/yard fabric found at Walmart. I created banners, cupcake toppers & signs to coordinate.

Games: The kiddos were a bit too young to play any organized baseball, but we set-up baseball tees for them to practice. I also picked up foam water splash baseballs at the dollar store and they played with them. Other ideas for older kids: Ball pass, longest hit/throw, or even a good old game of baseball.

Other Ideas: If you know me, you know that I insist we all dress-up for our parties. My husband hates it (he's not much of a costume person!), but I (and my kids) love it! I happened to find shirts for myself & kids at Children's place this summer (glad the boys size fit me!). I would have loved customized shirts, but just ran out of time I love these darling shirts by MSK Wear, she even has baseball dresses for sister!:

I always have a sign in book of some sorts, this year I decided to have guests autograph a baseball, which has been a fun keepsake after the party.

Favors: We gave out plastic bats & balls, which I was able to find at the dollar store!
